crank to chainstay clearance?

just wondering what the tolerances should be regarding equal clearance from crankarm to chain stays... I have an older bike with a cottered crankset and the non drive side is around 3 mm from arm to chain stay but more like 10 mm on the drive side...

Blimey, for some old cottered chainsets you had to take a taxi to get from the crank to the chainstay.........what's the chainline like?

Remember sometimes you had to have a lot of room for a chainguard and, god forbid, a chainbath.

Are you thinking that the 3mm is a bit narrow? Replacing the spindle should be easy, once you find the right spindle. On the other hand old solid steel cranks should have very little flex.
