Servicing shimano SPD pedals

Normally I can get the cone lock not to secure in the correct position, but not on my PD-M646's (red caged DX jobbies), which are are modified PD-M505 with a cage. Now the tool to service PD-M520 & 540 pedals is about a fiver.

Has anyone got any suggestions or offer help?

I used a small flat blade screwdriver to hold the cone still & a small/thin walled socket to do up the locknut as tight as i could.
Worked ok ;)
 
I agree Gruff, that's the normal prcoedure, but the, bearings/cone/lock nut are about 2cm deeper than normal on these buggers and that technique isn't usable. I'm thinking right now that I@m going to have to buy box spanners 8mm & 11mm and then modify them so they fit inside each other and inside the pedal.
