Help valuing rare mid-school cranks

Hi guys,

I've finally joined the 21st century and bought a new BMX with a spanish BB but I was gutted to find I couldn't use my old crank. I have the Profile SS oversized which has a 7/8 diameter axle (which equates to about 22.2mm) rather than the standard 22mm. I've looked into every option - I've emailed profile themselves, spoken to dedicated bearing shops and even brainstormed options with my friend who is a machinist (I don't want to risk rendering them useless on his lathe)!. It is never going to work on my new frame.

Sooo I'm tempted to sell it but I have no idea of value, other than that I have seen other SS cranks sell for just over £50 on ebay but these did not have the very rare and expensive titanitum axle and titanium chainring and my crank appears to be in better condition. Do you think £100+ would be obtainable? I'm going to stick on ebay in a moment and just see how it gets on but I'd rather not pay ebay fees etc so would rather sell privately so will cancel the auction early if I have to. I have no idea what figure to market them at privately though .

I'd really appreciate your thoughts.

O yeah, I also have a rear Suzue hub with 14mm slotted axles (to fit a frame with 10mm dropouts). Do you know if there is any demand for these?

no.2 ...14 mm axles where made with a slot profile shaft ...therefore if your axles are round you can flattenn the axles thread to fit ....



note the axles profile...these can fit both 3/8 th and 14 mm frames .....

answer to your question ....yes bikes from 99 on wards use them

I'm not quite sure what you're asking for - a picture of the profile cranks, or of the hubs, or both?

I am certain there is no way the SS crank will work in a spanish or mid BB bike, I'm just after a rough idea of their value.

Are you saying that the slotted axles will work in 14mm frames too? Would the axle not try and turn towards the flat?

no2- value to whom wants it ...
no3- once the locking nuts are tightend then the axles as all wheels are fixed.

apply chain tensioners if your a rider of speeds .......non if your bikes an office show n tell display .

ps i take it your accounted for your inner leg measurement / gear ratios /chainwheel sizes ....bearing crown sets / foot launch instep ......

You haven't read the above properly. The SS crank axle is 7/8 or 22.2mm. The largest opening on mid or spanish bearings is 22mm. My new frame has a Spanish BB and the bearings it takes have a 37mm outer diameter. I have been to a bearing specialist and no such bearing exists with a 37mm outer and 7/8 or 22.2mm inner diameter. They told me not to machine the inner diameter of the standard 22mm bearing out to 22.2mm as no meat would be left and the bearing would fail very quickly. The axle, crank, bearings and chainring all have to be used together as they are all geared up for the 7/8 or 22.2 mm measurement. I cannot use the SS crank arms, bearings or chainring with a conventional 22mm axle and cannot use the 22.2mm SS axle with conventional 22mm chainring, arms or bearings mentioned above- it is too big and will not fit.

I full understand the rules of supply and demand and this is why they will be going on ebay later on. I am well aware something is worth what someone will pay. I was trying to find out if anyone had any recent experience of SS cranks selling with the ti axle or had a good idea of what the market value figure might be.

a- to ride it

b- to have it on a display..

What you're not making any sense Snapper, are you drunk lol? Why will my inseam measurement help anyone trying to determine the value of a crankset I already own?

My new bike is to be ridden, that's all, and I want to make sure I like the way it feels. I can't use the profile SS cranks on it but I want another set of Profiles as the last ones lasted nearly 10 years and I liked the fact that the ti axle saved about 1/4 of a pound in weight. On my new bike, which is VERY light up front, it will make the bike feel slightly more balanced by lowering weight from towards the rear.

I don't care what any new owner does with the cranks, it's up to them. Show bike or ride hard I don't care either way if I get a decent price for them that goes towards buying another nice set. Why would someone bother to use a Ti axle on a show bike if the part wasn't going to be seen, do people do that?
