Not sure if tonedeaf101 used m950 or m960 as it changes in the build spec:

I used a M952. Just looked close and no cable rubbing on mine. Will post a pic very soon to show routing for mine. Make sure guide is over to drive side, that should avoid the rub. Does for me anyway :)

I've been looking at my other Zaskar builds (3x 1997) and all have been 'traditional' style bottom pull LX or XT. The cables routed without issue.

I assume they left the shops rubbing the frame as in our pictures, I don't understand why the tubes need to meet in the centre of the BB in the way that they do.
It maximises contact area, strongest possible join. Doubtless not a problem when the correct OE spec mech was used, so why not?

Our chaps frame appears to be in excellent condition with no evidence of cable rub/gouging from the original mech and cable run. Occam' s Razor, original mech didn't cause rubbing, we have the wrong mech. Be nice if our chap does come up with a solution ( I favour etype mech myself, avoids this grief and doesn't damage the frame finish with the call).

Thanks! That’s perfect, I think your cable guide sits slightly further over than mine, I will post up a picture when I get home for future reference.

I will look for a new cable guide on ebay :)

Thanks for everyone’s help.

Could it be that simple? Awesome!

I think so!

The pic below is my cable guide, its clearly more center than tonedeaf101's.

Seems stupidly obvious now i know

Thanks for everyone's help getting to the bottom of this.

Perhaps the correct mech was used the whole time.

By correct, do you mean the mech the op's trying to fit and is listed and pictured in bikepedia for the Zaskar LE three years running or was that another type?

Is your guide not adjustable? Id get a new cable guide if not. The one I got was only a few bob, from chain reaction and can move from side to side. Or cut a slot in your existing one. That wire will make mincemeat of your tubing in no time.
