Looking for a car, possibly a 4x4?

I'm mostly going to use a car to get AWAY from people.

I'm also a very careful driver and often get hooted at for giving way to people and bikes.

I'm thinking of maybe another 306 TD. Fairly reliable (apart from the awful electronics and heating system that's a nightmare to fix) and cheap to run.

But I wouldn't mind something I can get up hills without worrying. I hate to think my car is the weakest link when I'm driving.

No reflection on the drivers on this forum Emoco .... I'd imagine we're among the most considerate drivers around as we know about vunerability. Few of us here ( especially in Essex!! ) have any decent trails on our doorstep and it's the tool we need to get away from it all.

I think all drivers should be made to cycle / ride a motorbike before they can be given their driving licence to not only have an appreciation of vulnerability, but also defensive driving.

Buy what you like. The little Suzuki 4X4's are great little cars and only 1.3L so cheaper tax.
Having said that, (and not for any particularly tree hugging reasons) I'd go with a Focus estate if I was you, practicality an all that most 4X4s have surprisingly little space in them compared to an estate car.

By the way, for what it's worth this is my 'car' and I'm no farmer, anyone want to start out?? :evil:

If your only using the vehicle as a get away from it all thing then buy an escort van. Cheap to buy cheap to run plenty of storage in the back hell you could even throw up a hammock inside and doss on that.

I must be honest, if the chance arose I'd drive off road. That 4x4 above looks fun.

get a 4x4 and find some green lanes brilliant fun if you can get a hilux do it they are awesome ive just sold my hilux double cab regretted it immediately!

If that was a real concern then maybe cars shouldn't be used at all? What makes being hit and killed by a car 'acceptable'?

Who said that killing people was acceptable? There are approximately 3000 deaths on the roads each year and whilst this in itself is reprehensible, whats startling is that the cost of these to the British economy is nearly £8bn.

You're quite right, the number of cars on the roads does need to be reduced and we need to look at alternative methods of transport to facilitate this. 58% of car journeys are less than five miles and 25% of trips made are less than one mile, as a keen cyclist that statistic disgusts me. We're a country facing an obesity crisis and a doubling of fuel prices over the past 10 years and yet still people cling to their cars like limpets, its actually rather worrying.

Regarding the TVR vs 4x4 question though, all I was saying is that if you have to have a car, maybe you should go for the safer option as a method of damage limitation?
