Hello there fellow retrobikers
I could really do with some technical advice.
I'm toying with mismatched xt parts, m732 rear hub and m737 8sp block
Is it worth my while trying to transfer a later xt 8speed freehub onto the m732 body ala Sheldon Brown ???
If the answer is yes then I might need an 8sp freehub if anybodies got one
Thanxeverso DrJo

Yes, it can be done. Change the freehub body to an 8 speed and re-dish the wheel. Pretty straight forward job. :)

You really need to know what you are doing. And you asked so therefore I assume that you don't 8D.

Some freehub bodies will clash with the lip on the hub shell. You also need to use the correct cone for the freehub body.

Also flanges are wider apart on 135mm axle M73X series 7 speed hubs than on 130mm. And are really difficult to do 8-speed well on.

The "period" bodge for those of us to stingy to buy XTR/M737 was to use a road 8-speed hub with an MTB axle and an extra 5mm spacer on the NDS.

save time and aggro dithc the 11 to cog and run it as a nice 12 - 28 7 speed (you may need a 1 mm cassette washer to removea ny free play as the now 7 speed cassette is a smidgen narrower than a 7 speed)
