Fitting a modern 7/8/9 speed wheel in to an old frame 6 spd

Tried to replace an old rear MTB wheel (the current one is knackered), I bought a new wheel online (I chose it as it was the cheapest one with a Shimano Freehub), the current one is a screw on 6speed type.

Come to install it and the spindle plus nuts/spacer is about 5mm too wide. Any solutions or do I just send the wheel back? Can I adjust the spacers, set the frame etc?

If the frame is steel spread the rear stays slightly - 2.5mm each side. You can also look up 'cold setting' if you want. There is a potential for the smallest cog on your new cassette/ wheel to rub on the stay but try it first if you can.

You'd have to remove the non drive side spacer if possible. The wheel would then need dishing to recent re-centre it. All possible but a pain if its easier to swap it for one the right size.

I have done this, I.E. using a blank of wood, it worked.

Nothing to loose its only a £30 bike, just messing about trying single speed. Just needs some rim tape for the new wheel and chain then I can give it a go.

I may have an issue with the U-Brake and the slightly narrower rim.
