Tough short stems? And torque wrenches?

I'm looking at a shorter oversized stem for my Cotic BFe to get the fitment and feel dialled in. typically, I'm doing general trail riding described I think as AM, I wouldn't say I'm a freeride legend or downhill demon, prob won't be! I'm still sharpening old skills but it's a Swiss Army knife of a bike so anything goes, BMX track, down hill trips, I'm just never gonna be some crazy insane gap jumper or 40mph off roader! Im tall but super light for my height, Nether the less, I like tough long lasting confidence inspiring kit for whatever comes along and not chopped down me Havoc 750 bars yet and might not.

I've plucked out at the top of my budget a Easton Haven AM stem less than 50 quid, scary light at 135g! Seems to have ace reviews, and it's a nice compromise size at 55mm between 50 and 60, no rise. it's a beauty too! Too good to be true and long lasting?!

Similarly there's the well priced Pro FRS, Amazing RRP value and even keener with a few quid off. Bargain, also 136g or so! 50mm and a little rise which is good. Too good to be true too?

Also Raceface Chester is an option, though arguably it doesn't look as good for money

And back to bling, the Atlas is a super solid looking option!

The X4 Thomson is a bit more, looks great in 50 though, and a few others out there...

Any suggestions or comments about those selected?

Cheers

Oh and while am at it, bout time I invested in a torque wrench! Any affordable suggestions?

Yeah, I've currently got a longer Thomson, and it is beautiful. I like them as a brand too. There are a few breakages and creaks reported out there in the world mostly face plates caused poss by over torquing or just hard riding or bad luck, the 50 is tougher too. It happens to most brands mind across the world. Thomson still in short list. :)

Go Thomson. My X4 is a work of art...I love it and picked it up for sixty odd quid from CRC the year before last in the Christmas sale.

My next choice would be the Atlas. I love the Race Face Atlas range. The Chester stem is skanky and I'm not a fan of the Haven...if you want Eadton, I'd go Havoc.

Thanks, it's funny but since simply writing this I'm leaning towards the Atlas, it looks good. Also reconsidering the Thomson, Merlin has it under 60 which is brill. My bike would have OCDers in a craze though, currently got Nuke Proof black seat post it was good value when I built up, and Easton bars, and Hope Headset. Well it is a custom. Thomson do look stylish on any bike.

Haha skanky Chester!

Yeah the Pro seems great for the money doesn't it. I was eyeing up the old Atlas AM last week, annoyingly it was £31.95 then! Have ya got a pic of it in 50? I was dead tempted as the little rise was potentially useful.
Cheers

I've a 60mm thomson and a 55mm Easton haven, both are lovely stems. Much lighter than any of the old school short stems but I'm more than happy with both!

Thanks Kev, out of interest what shape is the 60 Thomson? Square stubby or slim and cylindrical like the longer ones?

Yep these parts have come a long way, I have a Gusset Sod, and DMR Headstock, both around 300g, and a monster 243 Racing beast at nearer 400! :D

X lite fly is what you need!

I actually think the hope cnc'd stems look great as do the nukeproof ones. Konaben has a n.proof one for sale here in 50mm size if you want a picture.
