Chainring lock ring - need a favour

Hi there,

Got an old lx chainset that isn't all that worn, but the entire chainring assembly has come loose/wobbles side to side with fingertip pressure. I can see a chainring lockring with indents for a special tool to tighten it back up. I think it's this situation basically...

I really don't fancy buying one. Does anyone who works in London have one they feel like loaning to a fellow retrobiker for a day or two? I'd pay a pint of beer and ensure it's safe return!

Worth a shot I thought...

Has the big wire safety clip been taken off it? could be the reason its loosened off :? if so and one isnt there ,put standard threadlock on first before reassemble and torquing it back up.

XT and LX both have them because the only difference was the outer ring. LX is silver and XT was Black Or was it the other way around :?

FWIW I'm 98% certain the tool you need is for M950 BB's, that being shimano / shimano makes it far more likely to work than something for isis.

see here, says the correct tool is also correct for truvativ isis BB's

I have one of these made by Tacx:

It's the only thing I've found which allows you to get the lock-ring off without damaging it.

You got it backwards, XT - silver, LX - black.

OP, you should be able to walk into your LBS and they'll tighten that for you for free.
