My father has a lovely mint 1990 531C framed Raleigh, since its a C its got aggressive racing geometry and tight 7 sp 501 gruppo.I want to make it more user friendly for him and want to put on a triple crank and mtb 8sp cassette. Will the bottom bracket, rear wheel and front mech all have to be changed to accommodate it?

LGF is yer man for this kind of advice, but I'd say yes.

It might be possible change just the freewheel mech on the back wheel, from a 7 to 8 speed compatible, but the other bits will need a change.

What type of front mech shifter does the bike have? As this may not have enough throw for a triple cranks.

Its a 105 front mech so I`d say its got to go.Ive already put on a flat bar,Atac stem(1990 neon yellow!)Avid levers and Gripshift so its turning out to be a bit of a chore.....

I reckon you can get away with a triple (something like 22/32/42 or better still 24/36/46. Assuming that the largest sprocket is something like 23 or 24T, it will give a usable bottom gear and still have enough for bombing down hills.

My audax bike has a 12-23 on the back, 24/39/48 on the front. You might even get it to work (just) with a Shimano short cage mech. With a Campag Chorus short cage 30/39/48 worked, and Shimano short cage ones can wrap a bit more chain as the cage is longer.

Hi

Do you know the width of the rear stays/ axle? If its 130mm you may have trouble running 8spd wheels as the last cog may catch on the rear stay just above the rear mech.

I would strip and clean the frame, purchase the triple chainset, new front and rear mechs plus a set of road specific flat bar shifters/ levers. These then allow the use of the existing brakes and wheels.

If the frame is 'close clearance', tyre choice will be limited as anything too wide will hit the front mech and/or the stays.

If the original wheels are 'cassette' - a new wider range 7spd cassette is readily available.

I dont know your budget but the following are suitable for the build:

Cassette: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SHIMANO-7-SPE ... 337ca7fe0f

Shifters:

These are bomb proof and are suitable for your road brakes - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EZI-FIRE-SHIM ... 35bf52cbb4

'Proper' flat bar type road shifters: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Shimano-Sora- ... 4846eb8bbf

Rear mech:

'Bargain' - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Shimano-A ... 1e76aab3df

'Quaility' - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Shimano-Deore ... 1c3130ffb5

Chainset (dont forget to change the BB!)

'Budget' - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/triple-mtb-bl ... 1c31586c15

'Bargain' - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-SHIMANO-F ... 484f41e147

'Reasonable' - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Shimano-2300- ... 4847003868

Then theres front mechs and you'll also need these little fellas - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Shimano-SM-CS ... 43b035dfb6 to replace the downtube shifters

You can also re-use the downtube shifters with a set of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Velo-Orange-T ... 2ec6f0637f

The list of available parts is endless! Thats just new stuff, there an almost endless supply of retro, second hand and so-on...

Phew!

Bit confused here but it sounds like your talking about a roadbike in the mountainbike section unless it is a mtb fitted with road bits :?

Now I am confused, Google points Metisse at a Triumph 650 Desert racing classic motorbike as favoured by Steve McQueen :? :? :?
