Dear All

Please find my mint 97 Cindercone pics attached following full rebuild. All original paint.

I purchased her a few months ago from Chayanderson on here (top bloke) and must say she was in great shape but just needed a few tweeks to bring her back up to the mark.

In addition to a full nut by nut stripdown and rebuild I did this:

1/replace Kona Race Lite bars with more comfortable Amoeba risers
2/replace standard Avid V brakes with better quality period Shimano XT M739 V brakes and LX levers
3/new inner and outer cables fitted
4/standard silver mounting bolts replaced with matt black ones
5/standard tyres replaced with Charge Splashback 2.1 skinwalls
6/Indy XC forks replaced with Judy SL's which were professionally repainted and fully stripped and rebult (with a little help on here from GT Steve - top bloke!)inc addition of new Kronos springs from USA (elastomers are shite!) and recond alloy damper (replacing leaking plastic one). New fork decals also added.
7/Worn middle ring replaced with a new gold Vuelta 32T alloy replacement (v light and high quality feel, off Ebay!)
8/chain and cassette replaced with modern SRAM parts
9/original pedals replaced with modern Shimano M520 SPD's
10/STX RC long cage r/mech replaced with period XT M739 med cage
11/hubs rebuilt and bearings replaced
12/headset replaced with modern Cane Creek S2 (lovely quality feel)

As you can see I not gone for a full out and out purist build with some consumables being replaced with more superior quality modern parts in subtle areas with a view of function over fashion if it improves the ride with little visual impact. Any origonal parts removed have been retained in storage.

Now the dilemma!

She is soooooo clean and not yet ridden that I dont know whether to ride her or hide her!

Garage Queen or Fun Machine?

I know Cindercones arent exacty rare exotica but frightened to get this minter dirty!

I have modern bikes to hit the big trails with and would only use her in dry weather (what's that!) so will ponder this decision over weekend. :?

Cheers
Andy

Re: Mint 1997 Kona Cindercone completed! Ride her or hide he

Next build will be to restore this mint and original Raleigh Peak I purchased on Ebay for the cracking bid of £40!

Totally origonal and can only be described as a 'barn find'.

Gonna do full strip and rebuild and use this to attach a child seat to the back of and blast up and down the old lines with my boy when he turn 1 later this year! Cant wait!

Plan to:
strip and regrease
replace cables and bearings
get rid of the X Lite ski jumps for some stubby modern black bar ends
slightly wider tyres maybe?
get rid of the reflectors!
new chain and cassette if required
ditch the sofa and fit a Charge Spooner saddle
fit rear child seat
ride it!

Thread to follow when complete!

Re: Mint 1997 Kona Cindercone completed! Ride her or hide he

What a gorgeous bike

I'm going to be blunt here, however. It's not high end, it's not 100% original and it's not rare. So ride the a**e off it and enjoy every second :D

Ride it....and ditch the skinwalls for blackwalls.

This and then you have the excuse to get something Pre '91 to put them on :D

I say ride it but if you want to keep it nice ride it sparingly and thrash something less nice.

Ride it - to do anything else would be a waste...

It would be a tragedy if that bike never got some dirt thrown on her.
