do i not need to keep the much out ?? I wuld have though that quite important...

the top cap of the stem... is it not important.. keeping muck out ?

Well - in that sense yes, you're spot on. Think I just meant that it isn't mechanically important... i.e. your forks aren't going to fall off without it. :)

OK .... revive the thread ....

So I haven't given up yet .. I fixed the stem with a part I bought on ebay and even serviced the gears .. it all running fine.

I have a couple of questions if anybody can help me out.

When I replaced the bolt in the stem I raised it up a bit .. its much more comfortable slightly higher. Its ok to do this isn't it ?

And Any advice on which rapid fire shifters should look for ? I have been patient with the shifter that came with it and they are ok .. but there is something lke being a big kid with the rapid fire ones.

I haven't got round to polishing the paint yet though . . . . .

There is a line on the stem that you should not raise it above. Below that it will be fine to raise it.
