To whoever up there.
Helitape (Helicopter Tape) is a thick plastic sellotape. In fact looks very much like the book spine reinforcing tape I use at work.
or a Polyurethane Protective tape with and Acrylic adhesive

a bit like the cable rub stickers you get, but probably better and more expensive.

I don't think it's more expensive. You can buy a 2 meter roll of the stuff for about the same price as half a dozen small patches. You can then cut your own patches to whatever size and shape you want and they won't have stupid pictures of lizards on them.

I use bike tape on cranks to prevent foot rub damage.
It's cheap and quick to apply so I replace when it starts looking tatty, which takes ages anyway.
The logos are still in great condition on all cranks I've applied it to.
