That was a cheap 1958 Mercian Superlight

I couldn't resist at that price. I don't understand why people don't value them more highly; every Mercian I've ridden has felt good. If it had been a vibrant Hetch or Holdsworth Whirlwind it would have been four times as much. Their loss. Some time ago I had Tom Crowthers own Superlight from 1957 (might have been 5:cool:, I sold that (I don't know why), and have been looking to replace it ever since but actually the new Superlight is probably surplus to requirements as I have five frames waiting to be built up; but as you say difficult to resist at that price.

Certainly back in the 70's Mercian's were a well respected frame, usually quite delicate with the slimmest stays and forks possible. Full wrapround seat clusters were feathered in almost to nothing. Very classy :D
