Good afternoon, miserable old day ain't it!.
Because it's so rubbish my thoughts have turned to a puzzling issue that i have with some shimano 600 downtube gear levers. They're from the 6400 range and are practically NOS, i've happily put them on my bike but in the process i've discovered a thin sliver of shaped plastic sitting in the cable groove on the right hand side/rear mech shifter that practically (but not quite) fills the groove, and i can't decide if it should be there or not. Any ideas on what it's for, and if it should be left in, would be greatly appreciated :D .

Cheers Matt

Yes it should be there. When you fit the cable fit the plastic bit to the cable ferrule then pull the cable through and clip the little plastic bit into the slot of the gear lever. It's only for aesthetics I think, I like the way it hides the ferrule anyway. Practically I guess it would prevent corrosion perhaps (?)
