Yes, freehub swap needed, you simply do not have the width for 8 cogs. On a positive note it's an easy job (does require minor wheel re-dishing), and once it's done you can run 8 and 9 speed cassettes.

doable, except you have to drop a spacer and cog 
and er might not actually be 8 speed then. <whistles>
