What dates or order were the different Mavic mtb rims available? I can recall the oxygen m6(?) the m7cd, the ma40, m261, m231 but gets a bit fuzzy after that. Was the 230 next, followed by 217, 317 and 517? What about 221/222?

from memory, the 217 & 121 DH preceded 238 (cheap) , 517 made of mavic's cheese like aluminium, the D521 bomb proof, later followed by the 321 disc specific dh rim.

You're mixing rim families....

231 and 261 were the same but different widths

I think the 217 became the 517 and then they added X's for disk models etc...

Love mombat. But the first yr of the 517 in citron was 1998? Would've sworn it was earlier.

Really, my daily ridden 517's (in fact, been on 3 different bikes and pretty much the only wheels i have used since 1999) are still 100% intact and solid

Yes, 517s are the same material as 717s and are quite durable. Much more so than 217s, which were/are prone to cracking around the eyelet holes.

The lightest and weakest of all the rims mentioned were the 230s, which had a very low profile and thus less fundamental strength than a 217 or 517.

ok ....here's one for the experts. Anyone know anything about Mavic 232s. Same era as 231/261s with the yellow zig zag logos.

Profile is a bit like a 217.
