7/8 spd Freehub Question

I have a set of Deore DX wheels with 7spd cassette and appropriate free-hub body. Can I change the free-hub body to one that will accept an 8spd cassette?

Yes, dont forget to redish the wheel afterwards and play around with the axle spacing to get it all right.

Unfortunately it doesn't sound like a 'budget' option then :? .... I had hoped to sell the 7spd thumbies and replace with 'cheapo' 8spd GS; hence the need for the 8spd cassette.

those 8 speed gs shifters will index an 7 speed cassette if the spacers are swapped out for 8 speed ones

A neat solution is to use an '8 from 9' setup. The first 8 cogs of a 9 speed fit exactly onto a 7 speed cassette. Buy a low-end 9 speed cassette, dismantle and discard the largest sprocket. Fit the rest to the hub and run with 9 speed shifter and chain.
