ajm is on the right track. the other fitting will only cap the outlet and leave a paper washer wich will fail over time, and still leave the valve itself in place.
turn water off, remove valve (with 2 pairs pliers) remove nut and olive and replace with new. sealing paste on olive NOT ptfe tape :roll:

Metric pipe is measured externally - next size up is 22mm so you'll not mistake that. Unless your house and plumbing are really ancient and imperial? Even so as far as I remember there's virtually no difference between 1/2" and 15mm - imperial stuff was measured internally which accounts for the apparently large difference.
