Is planet earth f**ked and should scientists be impartial?

If anything is ripe for a bit of bending,, it's numerical data!

humans will no longer 'evolve' in the conventional sense. To evolve requires the survival of the fittest which no longer happens.

and we are too narrow minded and short sighted - we just an infinite part of a mandelbrot set, focus on our timeline and an infinite number of times exist further and further in down to the tiniest microbe or particle. Focus out and you see the timeline of the universe itself and you will realize that we are just a mere fart in a very strong gust in a very large storm...

Prostitutes can get grants? I am calling my auntie right now, she can apply to the Government instead of freezing her ass off down the docks.

Those grants don't exist any more as the politician responsible is no longer in Government. Apparently it used to take the form of a brown envelope stuffed with about £1000 in cash, handed over at Victoria station. ;)

LGF, evolution happens in spurts. There is not currently the environmental pressure for human evolution but that an and will change at some point in the future. Then we will evolve. It will take serious environmental changes though but it is only dramatic changes that either cause extrintion or evolution. the two go hand in hand.

I've often found spurts change things :D

Humans like to think they are important but really are nothing more than a spec on the boot of mother earth no matter how much we like to think different. When earth thinks it's had enough of humans it is more than capable of finishing our time

so you subscribe to the Gaia hypothesis ?

Not as a strict way but as in a general way

Such things as are held dear by such people as aboriginies and native americans very much so that there is a balance to be achieved and a respect of that balance must be maintained or it all goes to poop

also science is often and wrongly in my mind ..defined as the only correct way.

science is like a game where those who work it set the rules then convince themselves theirs is the only way and everyone else is wrong. It is a game of best guessers

sometimes humans take being the top of the food chain so seriuosly that they forget their place in the world

Scientists research facts. This is they try to get to know the facts. Therefor they conduct experiments or make observations. Experiments or observations give data to analyse. Strong enough data can indicate what the fact might be. Repeat these steps over and over again, if the results are the same, fact is proven.

Not all data is numerical.

Scientists can't bend the facts. One scientist could bend some data in an article by misinterpretation or such. When this article is published other scientists will read it critically. If the First scientist made mistakes, the others will point them out, investigate and disprove the false conclusions of the first scientist. The scientific community is a big one and scientists who make up stuff are not appreciated, and end up without a job, funds, etc. Of course big business and crony politicians might fund research that fits their interests/agenda, but in the end the b***s*** gets exposed due to the self-correcting nature of science.

I don't think you guys fully appreciate the rigorousness with which science is conducted. See that screen you're looking at? The thing you're typing on? All parts of it developed by people who believe in numbers, data and statistical analysis.

You don't believe in numbers? Then stop using the stuff made by people who do. Ha! ;)

Science can't be bent, it is also self-correcting. Plus in most cases scientists working in the industry have to come up with stuff that simply works, so it has to be correct. Scientists at universities will neither be likely to bend science. Only scientists who do research on request of politicians might apply to your idea. But they can't bend the facts either, facts are simply that.

Your faith in science is touching, but sadly misguided. Scientists working for universities (and everywhere else for that matter) are very likely to bend science; whether consciously or not, every scientist has their own opinions and worldview and that affects every single thing they do and see.

You say that facts are facts and can't be changed... however bare "facts" are actually not that easy to come by. The same evidence can be viewed by two scientists with completely incompatible theories as supporting or proving their own pet theory correct, and yet both may be completely wrong; it often happens that several stories (theories) can be made to fit the bare facts.

Scientists work under a system of organised peer pressure where in some fields, having a minority opinion or worldview is enough to ensure that they will never receive funding and will be effectively unemployable. Sadly if you read enough science history you will find that all-prevailing scientific theories held as indisputable fact have actually been completely wrong and it is only years, decades or even centuries later that the tide turns.
