Bike shops

Thanks for all the advice and tips fella's.

Not sure how much information I shared without reading back over it all but just to clarify/ reiterate this is going to be a part-time shop whilst I continue my continuous night shift factory job *big sigh*

I'll elaborate a little more but when I'm on a definite path, I'll start a new thread in a current project type fashion.

The potential property is a shed style commercial unit, no shop front. It is located amongst a small development consisting of a fish mongers (could get smelly!) and what is essentially a junk shop/ antique shop. I have the option on what size the unit will be as the landlord (junk shop owner) will partition it accordingly. Profits from Stallion Cycles last year was a little meagre and due to hardly trading at all of late due to moving home I have very little money in the business. With this in mind and due to things being very unknown I'll er on the side of caution and keep lease costs down, this equals a small shop!

Because of this I'll be marketing myself more as a Cycle Spares, Repair and Servicing shop. I'll have a selection of spare parts on offer which will be consumable parts (tyres, chains, cables, etc) and used spare parts. I can build upon that as and when things develop as someone wisely said I need to build my stock around my communities requirements.

The local community does mainly consist of BSO's, there is quite a few BMX's too (which I have hardly ever worked on but they have to be the simplest of them all right!?) there's a BMX park just round the corner. There is also die hard cyclists with very expensive bikes (road and mtb). So quite a broad spectrum really.

There's a few holes in my mechanic skills but I will quickly fill these. I worked in a bike shop albeit many years ago. I'm a quiet'ish (reserved) person but easy to get on with and talk to. Business experience is just what I have learnt through running SC. This venture could be a harsh learning curve....

Of course I have many concerns; will I be able to earn enough from the shop being the main one. All I can do is try my best, I feel very ill prepared and feel like I'm just winging it, although I have plenty of support including quite a bit on here!

Of course you're all welcome to visit once I'm established although probably best in small numbers :) Tea and biscuits will be waiting, or a coffee machine in time ;)

Thanks again for all the input. If anyone wants to add more please do so, I need all the help I can get!

Oh....

There is one other local bike shop been there for years and years and has been rubbish from day one, the community knows this; I'm surprised he is still open for business, must be doing something right.

There was another local shop but it shut down late last year (worrying!). The last owner now does mobile cycle repairs, his an alright guy main focus of the shop was BMX's.

Other than that other shops are miles away with the nearest decent one being a good 20 miles away.

are you doing it on the island or moving inland ?

i was on sheppey not long ago and could not find a shop .

i started to ride with a group mainly based in the medway area , so dont forget to let us know location and contact details .

There's a group that congregates not far from my house but I'm always in bed after my night shift so miss them. Where abouts on the island do you go?

BTW I'm staying on the island for my sins.

we meet around gravesend .

only went to the island once for a job .

is there a population big enough to support a bike shop ?

I started with an empty unit, alot of tools, a few cables, tyres chains e.t.c and after 19 months trading have built up on the profits alone at least £20K worth of stock. It will snowball quickly Tel if you do it right.

Getting a premise open to public will allow you to order from the main distributors as well which will be useful when it comes to the more specialist parts.

A shop is a service, if you get the service right they will come. At least that is what I have found anyway.

Tel,

As per your post at the top - does this mean there will be a Readers Road Bike Shop section now??????

FYI, from personal experience BMX may be simpler but not simple - my daughters new BMX has a confusing brake set-up which i am trying not to get inviolved with - one cable to two cables to one and perhaps another split again! All this to enable the front wheel to rotate 360 i think - i just hope it does not break!!!

No need for a coffee machine, but the ingrediants and a kettle would be fine (no sugar for me please).

Best of luck,

Richard
