This is for the man cave, I've a pile of HiFi I really need to work out what I'm going to do with as as it is its sitting doing hee haw.

Ah! A man-cave tower of power! I have two or three of those!

iPod and an ipod dock to to a big ****-off old amp and speakers.

its the law of the man-cave.

My understanding was/is that early CD players were actually rather good in hindsight, but took a lot of flak from the analogue mafia - it was the recordings that were really, really poor, as the music companies had no real idea how to record/master for the new digital medium. Hence we now have the cult for older players and last gasp remastered CD series cropping up all over the place. Some pretty good prices for these reissues, it must be said, if you don't factor in the X formats you have already bought the Cocteau Twins/House of Love/add own retro favourite...

That used to be the law, but wife and family life has me downsizing :( I need something more demure, especially in the speaker department.

Mr K a retro player would be nice but I already have a Micromega stage 1 thats a bit temperamental, as well as other older stuff thats broken/dodgy in one fashion or another. Heart says retro head says modern.

nowt wrong with modern. You can often get better results. I havent physically loaded a CD into a player to sit and actually listen since about 2004!

iPod docks spread about the estate with quality amplification.

My budget is minuscule though and equipment often hails from the tip...!

Yes I think thats going to be the way to go, PC/Ipod source, amp and speakers.
