.... Nobody in the shop knew much about it, a few assistants argued over whether it was a Trials frame or a 'Trails' frame(?!) and the shop mechanic just grunted at me when I asked what size BB I should buy to go with it.

Obviously bought from the Waterloo road store and not the excellent Waterloo cut branch where I was working at the time! Good times, good lads as well. Being surrounded by bike porn all day was a tortuous and expensive habit though. Bikes we had(mainly road at the cut branch) that I lusted after we're in no particular order...

Cannondale r5000 Sacco team colours

As above but orange black with a very early campagnolo electronic group?! Some bloke came in one day who wanted a commuting bike- tried to sell him a badboy but he choose aforementioned £3.5k cannondale with a £10 cable lock to match!

Kona kula's- ended up buying a pahoehoe-still got it

Cannondale badboys(new concept at the time and looked cool)

Trek oclv us postal team colours-ahead of its time whatever you think of trek.

Occasionally we had to deliver bikes between stores which lead to a flat out no holes barred race flat out down the cut onto Waterloo road on an unfamiliar and usually wrong sized bike. That was how I found out the limits of grip with slick road tyres and disc brakes on a badboy. Think the record was about 45 secs door to door-if only we had strava back then!

As an owner of 4 cannondales.....liking the CAAD3. One question though. I'm currently building a killerV singlespeed-mainly for commuting to and from work either on the road or canal towpath. I was considering 700c rims that can either be slicks or cx tyres. Are there any issues running them on that CAAD or is there plenty of brake adjustment so they reach?? Is the only thing required is to lace them to mtb hubs??

Basically is it worth going the 700c route??

Thanks for any replies:)

I don't think the brakes have enough reach. In all of the pics above, it's running on 26" rims and 1" slick tyres.
Earlier in the year, just for a laugh, I slung a set of 700c Mavic Ksyriums (with 700x23c tyres) on to see if it would give it a workable 'Bad Boy Ultra' vibe. I don't think it works with this particular frame myself.
Hope these pictures help :)

Dead right, it was from Waterloo Road. Those two shops were like chalk and cheese. The Cut store seemed much more 'proper', but alas I wasn't into road bikes back then!
OCLV Trek USPS bikes were very cool, imo.

A little while ago I looked for a wider set of old-school flat XC bars for this bike, and came across these in the bargain bin of a local indy bike shop.
They were perfect for my needs so I bagged them, stoked that they were as light (possibly even lighter) than my black EA70s, and the Cannondale Competition logo was icing on the cake.

After more than two years in hibernation (following a migration from LA to NYC), this thing is about to be back in business.
It's gonna snow here soon and I want to be able to rip around on this lightweight lovely once more.

A few parts have trickled in, mostly old stuff at present. Final build should be a suitable mix of ancient & modern, fit for action.
No catalogue resto here, it's not my style. Besides, this frameset's a bit careworn for that!

I didn't go looking for these NOS Mavics but somehow they came to me. Always loved that CD grey ano, can't wait to get 'em laced up.

I'll post more as the build progresses!

Good story and a cool bike. Interested to see how the build goes.

Hubs are here, wheelbuilder is ordering the spokes - they will be black, of course.

Scored a NOS 1999 Flite Titanium in a great colour scheme. Perfect match for the frameset, I'm stoked.
