1979 Carlton purchased. Which model?

I picked this up yesterday. Good condition with Shimano Arabesque group-set and Mavic wheels. It is 531 which is what attracted me to it in the first place as a possible fixie conversion, but it seems like a real nice bike so I might restore it instead.

I got the manufactured date from the serial number. It was made in Worksop in June 1979. But I cannot find out the model type. Any ideas?

If it was mauve or red I'd say a Competition...... Does the sticker say 531 main tubes?

Trying to think what the late 70's Clubman looked like?

That Block lettering was 77-78 IIRC so might be an early 1979.

Pic of the fork crown might help :)

It is 531 tubing (assuming the rather battered sticker is original) and the frame number starts WH9 which makes it a Worksop, June 1979 build according to another site.

Cheers guys. :D

Yep, date is right :)

Carlton's always rode well as the geometry was nice... :D

The only oddity is the top tube clips holding the rear brake cable, Carltons usually had classy brazed stops on the top tube..

Does it have a cut out b/b like this?

Rear brake bridge like this?

If yes it is a Professional IMHO.Often sold as a frame set only.

It does have the BB cut outs and the rear brake is as per your photo. Is the Pro a level up from the Competition?

The chap I bought it from had it from the early 90's and said he bought it from the original owner who was an amateur racer.

Looks like I've got myself a nice bike! Definate restoration then rather than fixie conversion. :D
