Guess the wages......

What you need to do is start up a company that offers respite care for the kids. Employ keen school leavers / hard up Uni students, pay them minimum wage and charge social services £35/hour for the service.

Ok all this crap being talked about the national heath on the papers etc, the NHS has, since the middle of the 80s been gradually destroyed by succesive govenments who believe that state funded health should be run like a business. Strangely enough apart from thatcher and selling off hospitals on prime building land and placing the residents into what was laughingly called 'care' in the community the biggest changes were made by the B Liar govenment, tendering out cleaning and meal contracts to the lowest bidder, just like the council houses being sold to 'housing associations' who the increased the rents and the people in the houses/flats were generally on the dole anyway so the gov paid the rent increases and the maintainance contracts got tendered out to cowboys/Serco. The british national health system like the railways were the envy pf the workd for decades, if you want to have a real NHS then it should be run as a concern not a cash cow. The whole 'it's low wages but it's more a calling' is bollocks nurses were paid well until the start of the 80s when the unions were run rough shod over by the tories in the wake of the miners strike. I worked for 6 years in the NHS and am a qualified nurse for the mentally handicapped.
The whole nursing home thing, if there were more of a sense of family and doing what's right instead of shutting your relatives away in some badly run shit hole then the care homes would be half empty.

Rant over

Possibly

General agreement, but the imposition of local budgets and managers from outwith started with Thatcher's lot. She was a ####.

You only need to visit the poorest villages in Asia to find out how the elderly are venerated and contrast it with our neglect.
