'New' bike - need help fixing it up a bit

Normally there is some sort of engagement on the inner face of the hanger which locates it onto the dropout, a couple of prongs or a ridge of metal........ The little bolt just stops the hanger dropping off when you take the wheel off.

Means you can at least get the hanger pointing in the right direction and held on with the wheelnut :)

Is there anything on the inner face of your hanger ?

Will whip it off tomorrlw and have a look. Any idea roughly what tyre pressures i should be running? Im 92kg

Well you gus were right, the gear hanger had a little embosses semi circle that slots into the dropout. The only thing is this means the other side of the axel doesnt sit at the bottom of the drop out otherwise the wheel would be at a crazy angle. Is this normal? Gave everything a good clean uo and lube and took it out last night. Shes a beauty! The deraillieurs need adjusting as the gears werent as smooth as they should be, i know aboutthe two screws used to adjust them but does anyone have a link to a guide on how to do it? Cheers guys!

That's absolutely fine, so long as the axle nut still has plenty of dropout slot to "bite into" and keep the wheel secure (high quality road frames with horizontal dropouts have adjuster screws to help guide the axle to where it needs to be*). The main thing is that the wheel runs parallel between the chainstays.

Tyre pressure recommendations are printed on the side of the tyre. I normally just pump them up nice and hard i.e the high end of the range given.

Ok guys well everything was well and good for a week or so but my rear deraillieur has suffered a knackered tension spring. I dont think im going to be able to get a replacement so I was thinking about just upgrading the rear mech. What would be a decent budget upgrade rear mech to look for? dont really mind if its 80s or 90s or whatever as long as it will be reliable!

Are rear mechs universal?

Look in the items for sale section of the forum, it will give you an idea of prices and the many items available. You may be able to replace your mech with one the same. Vast choice out there!
