This mornings tinkering has yeilded another problem ....

At some point the thread has obviously been knackered in the drive side crank pedal spindal hole ... I didn't notice this when I removed the pedal.

When I offered up the new pedal the hole was too big

On inspection of the pedal spindal I removed weeks ago I now see the drive side pedal has a "sleeve" making it bigger.

The crank hole has been tapped out bigger and this "sleeve" in the pedal spindle is obviously bringing it up to size to fit.

Where do I get one of these sleeves to fit the new pedal in with?

Is this a "Helicoil"? and if so how do you fit them?

Here is a picture of the pedal that came out ...

Its a helicoil

normally fitted with a special t shaped tool. If you grip the helicoil lightly in a vice you might be able to unscrew it from the old pedal. then you just screw it onto the new pedal and refit carefully.

I'm reluctant to mess about with the old pedal as, at this point it is the only one that can be used in this crank.

Where can you buy helicoils for 9/16?

Any bike shop that fixes stuff rather than than just fitting new stuff will have em

Alternatively specialist tool shops will stock helicoil kits, and maybe spares....

Back in the 1960's there was a kit made with a reamer, double ended tap and threaded inserts. We used to fix the insert by gently expanding the ends with a small hammer.
You might be able to screw it back in then use a small punch to expand the inner edge so that the insert would stay in.

I can help you out with a new helicoil if you need...about £5 UK posted, or you can send me the crank and pedal, and I'll take the old one off the pedal or fit a new one in the crank.

I usually fit with Loctite 638 retainer to make sure it stays in the crank, rather than screwing out with the pedal.

Made a nice tandem crossover set with 3 sets of Campag UT cranks...got a few helicoils left over.

All the best,

Well thanks for the input.

Using a pair of rubber lined grips I have removed the sleeve from the old pedal which appears to be a metal cylinder that has a thread inside and out.

I have been able to reuse the sleeve to put the new pedal in and tighten it just as tight as I would normally and it's solid.

Looking at the park tools site

The sleeve looks exactly like that. If its good enough for them it's good enough for me.

Doesn't look look like a helicoil to me..just a repair from the olden days..

We had a selection of "oversise" bottom bracket cups and the like which we used with the corresponding taps.....
