track cycling questions

I remember Graeme Obree used to use shoes attached directly to the pedal spindle, did that get outlawed?

What is the power output of a rider in BHP?

I (think I) remember hearing that even the top riders only put out 1/4 BHP .

That is a lot less than I imagined it would be.

Apparently Hoy's maximum power (only delivered briefly, of course) was almost 2,500W at his peak. That's over 3hp. 0.25hp is about what you'd need to maintain 20mph on a flat road.

Ta.

Blimey, I reckon I could just push out 3/4 BHP if I needed to!

Does that mean Chris Hoy can do 80mph on the flat?

You'd need about 8,000W to do 80mph on the flat -- air resistance increases as the square of velocity :)

As a wise man once said, "If it wasn't for physics and law enforcement, I'd be unstoppable" :)
