Greatest car chase evar!

In real life....

an old acquaintance of mine running 140 in a 30 limit in his cossie, with 4 Police T5's behind him.

I can confirm 140... ;)

Last thing I heard, he was in prison..

NeilM-the guys name was Bud Ekins. As a local guy, I found the funny thing about the car chase in Bullitt was that they would go around a corner and magically appear maybe 3-5 miles across the City in another scenic location-also, there is a VW bus that gets passed more than once during the chase. Not too long ago, a Charger like the one the bad guys were driving in Bullitt, with all the options, went at auction for $275,000.00 US.....

There are a few film stars I truly love that define cool.

James Coburn. The coolest man to walk the earth.

James Garner.

Steve McQueen.

Coburn and McQueen had an obsession with being macho and manly, and cool.

Overall I reckon they achieved it, in spades.

Garner just is cool, and never seemed to work at it.

Like Newman.

I can't watch a car chase that does not have context, and usually that means decent actors.

So, your Vim Derv and those sorts just don't cut it for me.

Not strictly a car chase - but Gromit and the Penguin in the wrong trousers - is the best chase sequence made in any film, ever.

Me in my old Evo VI trying to keep up with an F40 was quite exciting, especially with her telling me to "slow down we are doing......!"

Ronin or Bullitt.
Hard to choose.
Cars were cooler in Bullitt, but Ronin was more atmospheric!
If Cool Hand Luke had invented car chases , there would have been no need foe a thread/debate!

Surprised no-one has mentioned Herbie!

Does the " Eleanor " chase in the remake disqualify itself by having a CGI mustang for the jump?

For me it has to be the " Speed " episode of Father Ted. Who knew Dougal could handle a milk float as good as McQueen?

For me any CGI cars completely ruins it for me - A lot of modern films don't have the thrill factor because you know things are no longer real.
I love cars that jump so Dukes and Smokey/Hooper are fairly special to me.

My favourite all time stunt is the barrel roll jump in Man with the Golden Gun.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hh0VF6s-UYU

But back to plain old car chases....

Opening chase of the Nightrider in Madmax was a great one.
French Connection
Ronin
Bourne Films
Bond movies - usually involving that french stunt group that specialised in car handling. (Good boat chase in LaLD too.)
The Transporter
Funny but good...
Italian Job
Blues Brothers

Bullitt is an all time favourite and the one that started them all really.
A car hit a camera during that chase, they used the shot but flash the frame when it happened then cut to a new scene. My dad used to tell me the cameraman died in that scene but I've since found out that was just an urban myth.
