My experience is that the most important things are wide legs and metal jaws.

Worth checking out your local branch of Lidl, they often have a work stand on sale for around £29. For home use these are more than adequate.

I've got one of these, i was going to get a Park one but funds meant i needed a cheaper alternative, after looking around i saw this in my local 'Clas Ohlson', you can get it mail order and its on sale. Its very sturdy I've had mine on the grass in the garden and its wide feet it has always felt safe. And it comes with a handy tray to put your nuts and bolts in, and a Cup holder for your cold can of beer 
Winner i say, until you can afford the luxury of Park.
