Shimano Cassette Quick Question

I think I've ballsed up here, I'm to vintage to have much experience of cassettes :) I have a wheel with a Shimano 600 hub, checked the hub length with a pair of calipers and its 35mm. I bought a Shimano 7speed HG Hyperglide cassette which when fitted is about 3mm short of being held by the lockring.

Can I add a spacer somewhere, or do I give up and buy an 8 speed cassette?

A spacer is needed. I had the same problem this week as well. Bought Mavic 700c wheels with Mavic hubs, I didn't realise that Mavic freehubs are longer than Shimano cassettes and need a spacer that is supplied with the wheel, as my ones were second hand the spacer wasn't with them. Luckiliy I found one in the tool box I had from running a 7 speed cassette on a modern hub.

Yes it's fine. You can just use an old cassette spacer. If you pm me your address I'll post you a selection.
