Once cleaned up what do people favour for polishing up components?

Duraglit?

though not always easy to have acces to, those polishing machines are excellent. They look something like but not necessarily this:

If you have access to a workshop with one they are great for doing aluminum parts, it will make them look like chrome.

I will be using elbow grease, a bit afraid to polish too aggressively.

Yes a polishing wheel will remove the anodising.

Personally I use WD40 to remove the grime and Autosol to restore the shine.

For raw aluminium Belgom Alu is king!

I polished these rims with a proper polishing kit from 'The Polishing Shop'
And then finished with Belgom Alu...

Autosol for anything stainless steel - But note Autosol or anything like that is too harsh for aluminium to keep a mirror finish.

A variety of things, it depends how bad it is. I rate autosol - it might not give a mirror finish on ally but I have always found it gives an easily maintainable finish.

Duraglit is not very abrasive at all, more for removing tarnish off gold and silver in my opinion.

I thoroughly recommend you get some kind of mechanical aid, it makes an awful lot of difference. Even if it's just a cheap dremel copy.
