hey paul, i do know what you mean, they are a bit more expensive than some others but i like to think they are a bit different than the average bike (he says stamping his feet shouting ORANGE! ORANGE! ORANGE!) :D ;)

Absolutely, i'd take one over a Specialised, Trek etc at that price-point. But there are manufacturers like Genesis who seem to be doing UK hardtails just a little better. Plus the spec and price of upgrades on those Merlin Cycle bikes is pretty much unbeatable.

Still, even saying all that I love Orange and will own a third at some point (i've already owned a Gringo and Patriot from new).

Go second hand, you get a mahoosive choice of pimptastic stuff then, pretty much what you want for a grand within reason.
Or, pick up a second hand Yeti ASR-sl/Sub 5 etc frame for ~£500, and you have £500 for rest of build kit. Merlin do some good deals on new shifters/mechs etc, look out for some SH forks and wheels - should get some Hope/Mavic and good forks for ~£300. Few quid on some new cheap but light finishing kit. Job done. May spill over by a few quid, depending, but you end up with a really nice bike :)

Looking at Jez's clearout this week i would suggest you go speak to him with that sort of money he might have something in your budget

thanks guy

sorted now, after several weeks of faffing around on Ebay and such like, I found my LBS which I have never been into in 18 months of living here, does 10% off Specialized, so went for a new Stumpjumper,
