Dropout length for SS conversion

I've got a couple of old road bikes and I'm trying to decide which bike is a better bet for conversion. One of them has shorter dropouts than the other

Those are the shorter ones - do you reckon they are long enough to be able to effectively tension the chain?

Should be able to, you may require a half link if the combination is not spot on.

I've got a half link here I don't need, I think it's for a 1/8" chain, if required give me a shout.

As per above.

Go with whatever frame you prefer. If you encounter a chain issue then as Tel says, a half-link will sort you out.

Do a web search for "magic gear calculator" (sorry I cant link to site as i'm on my phone) it'll work out what chainring/cog combo will work in your dropouts.

If your frame's got 1/2" or more adjustment, you'll be fine with std links, shorter and you'll need a half-link. (Insert Lord of The Rings joke here)
