GT Lightning 1997

Dirt Disciple
About time I posted my build. A near mint condition 19" GT Lightning frame purchased 18 months ago, and slowly built up with Shimano M75x / M95x, Thomson/Easton/Crossmax and some carbon SID 80mm World Cups. Rides well, climbs great although front end is a little low so considering looking at some 100m forks, but unsure if geometry will suffer. Be great if any experts out there could offer advice..[/img]

looks great! 100mm forks would not be a good idea. sadly, very low front ends are a bit of a fact of life with old school mtb's, especially GT's.

100mm will rake it out really badly, the steering becomes really vague and front end traction almost non existent. climbing is woeful too.

i speak from experience of having an avalanche set up with 100mm bombers some time around 97 or so. it was not long until i swapped them with my mate for a setof 80mm Z2 which were a far better fork for the frame.

i would suggest trying a steeper stem in the first instance, if you need to get the front end higher than it is now
