98(?) Dekerf Generation 40th B'day build

congrats bday boy!

here's what 96 looks like just clearcoated. this was lacquered by previous owner and it's not a professional job. finish is not durable and i'll have to strip and get redone soon as there's signs of rust spidering/veins creeping in underneath a few areas. :(

Wow, that's exactly the look I am wanting to achive. I am struggling to find any positive info about clear powdercoating a frame. Surely there must be a clear metal primer somewhere?

And I never knew DeKerf made chainrings, I take it they are rare?

Oh, and thanks for the b'day wishes :)

i'm planning on leaving it clearcoated if possible. it's nice seeing the raw welds and brazing on the rear. just like you, i need to figure out how best to do it to avoid any unsightly rust forming underneath. ;)

as for the rings, i think they came standard on certain years. and yes, haven't seen too many of them. i got lucky with getting a set from a friend. my guess is, and it's only a guess, that they are rebranded Race Face rings. they look to be identical in design and machining.

Have a look at canuckinboston DeKerf Generation. It's probably one of the best example of how DeKerf sold the complete bike straight from his shop from around that period. His looks to have standard chainrings, while mine are compact.

I don't think just lacquering over steel is a very viable proposition Marcus, but Curtis still seem to offer a clear option on their steel frames and I'm sure that shows the steel and the welds very clearly, so maybe you could ask them how they do it? They're in Wiltshire and build their frames there.

Thanks for that, Antony, some nice stuff there. I'll fire off an email to them tomorrow and report back.

would there be any benefit from a clear powercoat instead of a normal laquer?
