My Sun frame arrived today so I now have measurements and was hoping I could get some help on whether to fit 700c or 27" wheels, the measurements are
Rear dropout to brake bridge =360mm
Between rear dropout=127mm
Front fork dropout to top of fork=350mm
Between front dropouts =95mm
As its my first proper build just wanted some advice on wheel size,if Ive got it right I seem to think I could use either but please tell me if Im wrong, thanks

I am no expert but I would have thought that any Sun would be old enough to need 27" wheels and that the dropouts should be 120mm. (just maybe new enough for 126 but doubt that)
Of course it may be something that isn't an old Sun. Did someone like Raleigh buy the company and carry on putting them out?
But assuming it's a proper old one the above should be correct.
Correct me of course if my general rather than specialised knowledge is wrong.

As mentioned the original wheelsize would have been 27 X 1 1/4 with a rear OLD of 126mm for a 5 speed screw on freewheel.

Options are to use the original size wheels and keep your brakes or go for 700c clinchers and change the brakes because the 700c are about 11mm smaller in diameter.

The frame will have been built with large clearences in the first place so going to 700c just makes them look silly in my eyes :)

You could simply "spring the frame" by 2mm each side when you put a 130mm wheel in, adjust the frame yourself (Sheldon Brown), get a local bike shop to cold set it or mess about with the washers..........

I'd try and spring the frame first, the wonder of a steel frame :)

Ah I see! I was going to comment that you will probably not find a 27" wheel with 130mm hub. I thought you was going ss on this?

I think that 700c with huge baloon tyres (something like these http://www.cyclestore.co.uk/productDeta ... ctID=55364 ) would work well. The fat tyres would fill the void. But then I guess you have got the brake reach problem so 27" would probably be best in which case I'd use Michelin World Tour tyres.

I will check some measurements on one of bikes against yours though just to be sure.....

Measurements of an SLX close clearance frame.

Drop out to bridge - 360mm
Fork to crown - 360mm

Compared to yours something just doesn't add up....

I measured from where the axle of my wheel sits to the centre of the brake bolt. Mine uses 39mm - 49mm brakes.

If you did the same then I'm thinking that it can't be 27" rims that you need, I would not be able to get 27" wheels in my frame and I doubt that yours is built with the same clearances as mine! Also your fork end to brake is 10mm less at 350mm if thats the case then you won't even get a 700c in.

I'm wondering if your bike was built with 26" wheels. Especially being so small. Would be good if someone else could add their frame measurements, especially if they've got a 27" wheeled bike (or a 26").
