Nope not a new bike, but has anyone else noticed an increase in Newbie comments randomly appearing on threads? :?

I love hearing about builds and updates, but the fustration hits when i log on and its some random comment........ :x

can it be sorted?

Yup, seems to be an influx of them at the mo.

More stringent registration requirements, to sort the humans from the spam bots required perhaps?

I've been reporting every spammer I see for months now, and don't notice much of an increase.
It only takes a little longer before they get removed nowadays, which means the chances of seeing such posts increase.

Captcha codes, verification questions ("how much is ten minus five?", etc), activation mails, you can go as crazy as you want with the security, but they'll still get through.

They are a PIA, but at the same time the completely random messages amuse me, as they look like proper documents that have been translated by a computer.

They probably look that way as they are proper documents that has been translated by a computer

I'm afraid the random " I am really taken by the colour of your shoes" and " How interesting, I would very happily like to know more" messages also make me smile.

Let's face it, I'm easily amused.

All of that said, I really don't want to know how to improve my golf swing

That's the problem when you have such a popular site with such a massive monthly hit rate.

Spam posts are usually pretty easy to spot though when you see them.
I've just deleted four more messages from a spammer who has registered about six different user names in the past week or so.

If you do see a message you suspect is spam, please have a look which mods are online and send one of them a PM with a link to the thread.

Deleting spam is much easier than finding all of it.

I am a mod on another vaguely related forum, and there you get a few, then a quite patch, then bam they hit hard. Worst ones are the ones you can't tell, is it a spammer or someone actually posting (some are damn close to actual people)

or the ones that join, log in, then post endless spam post into the spam reporter.

weird thing, don;t know how much comes here, but there, we get no porn spam, its all fake cheap crap that gets spammed

Personally, thats got to be one of the good things from sp*m, getting the occasional picture that raises the heart rate a bit! I never click on them though, plenty of genuine sites for that sort of thing
