Torn shoulder ligaments - Anyone else done this?

In the middle of a stonking good ride yesterday, I took a real tumble on tarmac. As a retired Martial Artist, my instinct was to shoulder roll, unfortunately, I was cleated to 22lbs of bike, so ended up landing on my right shoulder with the bike on top of me.

The diagnosis is that I have torn all three ligaments in my right shoulder, which they may, or may not operate on.

Anyone here done this?

How soon will I be able to ride again?

My delightful son has told me 12 weeks is typical recovery time..... you can really go off your kids, can't you.

My workmate has recently done his shoulder in. Not sure if ligaments or not. He had surgery on it and i think they said 8 weeks until he can ride again but your 12 sounds a bit more realistic. Its quite a sensitive area and take more load than you think (as do most body parts).
He has to rest it as much as he can and is having physio for it also i believe.

But he isnt very careful with it! And its almost certainly going to give him problems when he is much older.

Recover well. Rest up.

I seperated my AC ligament about 2 years ago. My collarbone now floats above the rest of my shoulder, especially noticeable if I roll my shoulders upwards. I looked into surgery at the time but the options did not look promising. I was told to expect arthritis in this area later on because it will suffer from excessive wear due to being less supported.
Riding wise - it does not have a noticeable affect, maybe aches a bit after a long ride.

Shoulders are a bit tricky and I'd see a specialist. People my end (Cumbria) travel to manchester.............

outch, i feel for you.

i stretched the ligaments a few years back, it was 3 months before i could ride without pain so i guess you could well be longer.

Ah well.

I know there is no short cut to any recovery, I was just hoping it wasn't as bad as it looks.

I saw a shoulder specialist yesterday, he is the one who took me through the three possible recovery options. I'll just have to wait for the call later, and see what they have decided to do.

Looks like my road bike project will have to wait a few weeks then

One compliment the surgeon made; he asked if I was an elite athlete.

I did it nearly 25 years ago and it still causes me pain on occasion. The problem is that my shoulder joint where the ball from the arm goes in is slightly loose. It isn't as bad as it used to be when on bad days I just couldn't lift the arm at all. I now have over an inch of difference in the width of the two shoulders. I don't want an op though as they would have to cut through a tattoo I have on that shoulder and ruin it

Oh crumbs mate that sounds nasty  but glad youre alright relativity speaking.
Hope this heals quickly and to ensure that youve got to stop doing anything on that side no matter how much you want to. :?

impossible to unclip when your world is swimming  No one has the presence of mind to unclip in a spill and if they can then they are not of this world :?

In over 25 years of riding and MA's, it is the worst injury I have ever suffered. When I do a thing, I do it properly

No danger of me using my right arm at present... too blinkin painful.

I'm not fussed what treatment they decide on, as long as they get me fixed.

As for uncleating, no, there was no time; it went, carslideground... only much faster.

Did my shoulder in a few years back, my best advice would be DO THE PHYSIO!!! ALL OF IT!!! THEN DO SOME MORE!!! It speeds up your recovery time no end and stabilizes the joint, which is what you want - put it this way I could lift a barbell from my elbow but couldn't lift a pint at arms length. It's the little niggly bits you need to remember about, which also cause the most discomfort... Get well soon buddy!
