More than you can shake a stick at!!!

What i mean is some gears are the same example 42/12 is the same as say 22/32 and so on so it says 27 gears but in reality there are matches so the number is less[cant remember exactly ive a book on this somewhere]

Also, it doesn't give the necessary range for all kinds of riding, which means you'll need to fit different chainrings depending on where you're going.

Agreed. I was in Wales last week, on what I consider a proper MTB ride (not trail centre) and 1x11 would not have done the job for me on that terrain.

I believe that 1x10/11 is being pushed by the manufacturers, just because it is difficult to fit a 3 ring set-up on a 29er and still keep the chain-stays short enough for it to handle as neatly as a 26 inch wheel bike.

They've ditched the slant parallelogram, so much like all the old derailleurs before SunTour invented it in 1964.

And I have to say, that SRAM XX1 is one FUGLY derailleur.

Also, why is it called XX1, 21 in roman numerals, when there are only 11 gears. :?
