Specialized Shark Fin re-manufacture ?

Looks like the thread has gone a bit cold

have to warm it up a bit

did anyone manage to make a fin yet???

Saw a modified A2Z adapter that looked pretty good IMO.

Some things i would do a little differently, i plan to mod one the same`sh as a test.

Not sure I'd trust a green sand cast item as a major load-beaing part of my braking system...

I am of course assuming here that the original sharkfin was forged or at the very least heat treated to T-6 temper?

(I still keep looking for a sharkfin on the bay myself in the vain hope... not sure I could get a compatible seat stay for my 2000 model Rockhopper FSR)

this is the sharkfin re-manufacture thread
so lets re-manufacture it :cool:

forging is very expensive $$$$$$ for the dies
so inless you make 1000's of them,
we dont know how many specialized made in the 1st place, or how many FSR's either
if someone from the original manufacturing process would get on this forum ???? we'd know..........
it looks from the suface finish and iregularities
from the pics i've seen on the forums to be cast

the design is very rigid, not like this A2Z crap
having to brace back to the V post

braking loads will not be too high, ~120kg
most is taken by the front

i'm making some steel prototypes out of 5mm & 3mm plate

there was a guy a few posts back who wanted a 3D CAD drawing

You make some good points :)

Thinking about it assuming you could properly heat treat it afterwards I reckon casting would be the cheaper (and easier) way to go...

should be fairly straightforward to make a green sand mould from an original if done right (lost wax casting - using an original as a template - is an option that springs to my mind here as, due to the shape of the item, a split mould might not be easy to make).

I'm guessing here but might the original have been die cast?

Finished item would have to be heat treated to T5 or T6 too
 
I have someone that can make a sharksfin but I need to give him a blueprint for it or an original. Can't find either anywhere. I want one for both of my fsr's. any one can get me either of them then I can get them made within a week.

if you want the original blueprint you will probably have to buy it from specialized
