A new beginning (P5): 1995 Kona Humuhumu-Nukunuku-A-Pua'a

Hi Adrian. My bike has a Shimano 7 speed internal hub with thumb shifter. As with yours, the axle is slightly wider than the 120mm rear width. I measured the opening with the hub installed and I've got 128mm. The width needed to accommodate the new 8 speed Shimano Nexus internal rear hub is 132mm. I'm concerned about the chainline and if the wider width required to install the hub would affect it.

Thanks John, thinking of swapping the bar tape and Rolls for some brown grips and a Brooks saddle. It's a shame the rear canti bosses spoil the look a bit but I think I might regret grinding them off in the future!

This is just awesome, bet it's dead comfy?

Can just imagine cruising along the beach, or to work, or down some canal paths. In fact I'd cruise everywhere on it!!!

- looks for cruiser bars and maxis hookworms for a simular build.......

Wanted one of these for a while now and when I saw the first page of this thread I though mmmmm White Walls and White grips and pedals, man after my own heart, lovely job.

I might be wrong but I think all the old Humu's had rear canti mounts so perhaps they have been removed? Mine is a '95 and still has them. They don't look great but I want to keep them in case I ever get rid of the the Nexus hub and coaster brake.

Some years (in some markets) had a coaster brake with a tab on the left chainstay; those frames didn't have any cantilever posts on the seat stays.

I think the brown tape & Brooks would be awesome.
I'd leave the canti mounts, too. You could get some pimped-out blanking plugs, or make/modify some sort of "Humu-appropriate" rack:

Definitely won't be grinding off the canti mounts and the brown Brooks and bar tape will be coming as soon as funds allow!

Really like that last rack in your links too :D

It's not a particulary sought after Kona and the funkyness of the frame means experimentation there was never going to be a conventional build

I like the freakyness and and where it's going
