Removing the headset crown race

Thanks guys for the advice i got it of slowly edged it up with an old knife and popped it further with a flat blade.

The new one however is going to need some persuading and was starting to think LBS i have the cups in, just the crown race and where the tube splays that bit at bottom without the right kit a might knack it.

Although we_are_stevo's method of cutting a slice in it i have seen videos of split crown races but not sure whether to do this

Thanks in advance for this i just never have had to do this before

Use a piece of wood to bash it on with.No way the wood will damage anything.

Much can be achieved with wood Cue tittering from our American cousins

Well, getting it off with a screwdriver and a hammer is ok I guess but putting it on again should require proper tools.

I'll go along with the other guys here who reccomend buying tools for the job.

Does anybody happen to know how much this costs at the LBS to do fit a crown race funds are really tight right now to go buying a tool for it

cheers

It takes them about 5 minutes to do the job.

Put the crown on and hammer away with the tool. With proper tools, the crown will then come straight on the fork.

It's an easy job but requires proper tools.....and some experience.

Some random comments from reading the above :

• Even the correct (park) tools can damage the crown race when removing from some crown / fork combinations :-(

• Split races don't suit all headsets :-(

• Wood isn't the best / most fool proof way of fitting cups into a frame :-(

And a quote from another post about home made tools :

Worked a treat

Crown race tool made from two pieces of plastic plumbing pipe :

I sleeved the end to help stop it splitting and chamfered it a bit internally :

So it fits a king race perfectly :
