Campag BB... what's this?

Finally acquired a 9-speed Record chainset in 170 after years of looking for one at price I wanted to pay.

With it came a Campag BB I've not seen the like of before.

2 adjustable cups like used to be on Athena BBs. 111 axle length. But the 2 smaller drive side bearings and larger non-drive side, as on Record and Chorus 102mm BBs, which have a drive-side fixed cup, but with alloy central sleeve like Chorus.

Wondering if it's a Racing triple or a Pista? Or a last-generation C-Record type? Any ideas?

sounds like a record triple bearing BB - model number BB-33RECART (for the english threaded version)

I'm not sure what spindle length is required for record 9 speed - 10 speed is 102mm, but I can't remember when they changed the design of the cranks (which look the same at first glance)

It's a C-Record (BB-11RECART) cartridge unit:

Circa 1993, all Campag road and mountain chainsets used a 111mm BB axle. This one was specced with the Record, Record OR, and Chorus groups:

All 9-speed Record and Chorus cranks use a 102mm axle. The change actually came about in the 1995 catalogue - when Record and Chorus were eight-speed groups.

Hi Jim, any idea what the difference is between the (earlier?) BB-11RECART and the BB-33RECART? I thought the first version of the campagnolo sealed BB was the BB-01RECART/BB-03RECART as shown on velobase: http://velobase.com/ViewComponent.aspx? ... &AbsPos=15

I've never seen the BB-11RECART before (not saying it doens't exist or that you're wrong - you have much more knowledge on these things than most people, including me!)

A bit of Googling finds both the BB-11RECART and the BB-01CART (not RECART) listed in this 1994 spares catalogue:

The BB-01CART shown there looks like the familiar Athena unit that takes a splined cassette-style tool, not the six-pin style of the one pictured at velobase.

The BB-33RECART seems to be the Record 102mm unit:

Velobase is pretty good, but there are errors every now and then.

Thanks Jim. I think I've got it sorted now though - the confusion seems to be partly because velobase isn't 100% accurate, and I have always thought that the BB I have is the BB-33RECART. I just checked the campagnolo catalogues, and I think it goes like this:

1992. BB-01CART/BB-03CART (italian/english thread) is the only cartridge BB on offer. I didn't check earlier catalogues, but in 1992 it's the only one listed, and is the same for record, chorus and athena groups. note the lack of "RE" in the model number, meaning they haven't given it "record" status. There is no mention of triple bearings. (in the same year, loose ball BBs did have RE, CH and AT denominations, meaning they were different for each group). Velobase has this listed incorrectly as BB-01RECART, yet the catalogue scan clearly shows it as BB-01CART.

1993. the cartridge BBs are BB-11RECART/BB-13RECART, for record and chorus groups. 111mm, triple bearing. athena uses the BB-01CART/BB-03CART. loose ball BBs are as in 1992.

1994. I can't find any model numbers in the (german) catalogue scan in the RB archive, but things appear to be the same as 1993.

1995. ?

1996. not sure of model numbers, but record and chorus both have 102 and 111mm cartridge BBs listed. record now has the carbon sleeve.

1997. BB-31RECART/BB-33RECART are shown in the spare parts catalogue. no length is mentioned, but I assume 102mm.


I didn't check catalogues, spares, and tech docs for all years, but it seems like there are two triple bearing BBs - the first, 111mm, and the second version 102mm. I'm not sure about the second version though, as by the time record was using a 102mm spindle, I the record BB had a carbon sleeve.... as ever, with campagnolo it's not straightforward!

I am now certain though that the BBs I have, which I thought were the "33" model, are actually "03", as they are 111mm and not 102mm. That's what I get for relying too much on velobase I suppose!
