Carlton Continental

Hoping to get a brooks saddle for it and either white or brown bar tape.

Just shows how well it was built that all that is stuck is the drive side BB cup, everything else came loose with no problems.

Had another few hours on the bike.

Firstly i completely stripped the wheel down to it component parts and made a start on cleaning.

The hub came up a treat, pitty the middles corroded so badly, i'm thinking of painting the middle with some black paint, leaving the flanges chrome.

The rim has come up nice aswell.

'27x1 1/4 Dunlop Special Lightweight Made In England'

This is what was hiding under the surface rust.

Forks have come up a treat too.

I'm thinking of removing the last bit of laquer and polishing them, then getting some re-pro 'carlton' decals for them.

Next was the brake calipers.

One on the left is as it came off the bike, thr right one is after a 15min cleaning and wire wooling.

Still had the original pads too, but these are well past it.

Luckily the BB isn't a Raleigh thread, so that gives me the option to fit a newer square taper BB for more crank choices in the future.

This is a standard MTB non drive side cup, went straight in with no resistance.

And final for the day was to start on the rear mech.

This was properly gummed up with many years of oil and muck, so a full strip down was in order

Didn't realize it had metal jockey wheels.

Is this standard, to have a toothed upper and a smooth lower wheel.

This is looking good, keep it going!

I think you are right about the forks, even after cleaning they look a bit tatty with that last bit of lacquer left at the top, go full chrome and re-decal them.

Did the BB cup all the way in? With Raleigh threads you will get the cup to go so far in then it will get really stiff and start stripping threads, do not ask how I know this....

When replacing the fork 'buckle' declas use the ones without the words 'Raced proved' - Lloyds hold both types.

This is the same mech on my 58 Constellation the two jockey wheels are different...

Toothed at the top and smooth at the bottom.
