Help me please road people.

A female friend is looking to buy a road bike so she can do a triathlon and I've realised I know nothing about Shimano road groupsets.

She is looking at a Sora equipped Giant and a 2300 equipped Trek. The Trek looks like a nicer bike but in terms of the groupsets which is higher?

2300 is the basic groupset, only really available to bike builders, the next step up is Sora, then Tiagra, 105, Ultegra and finally the race-bred Dura-Ace.

Cheers for that. She is looking around £500-£700 so Sora will be the best she can hope for I suppose. The biggest (or smallest) problem is that she is only 4'10" !!

She has found a Giant that seems good value for £500 reduced from £725. I thought a Trek might be a good shout but they seem a little less well equipped.

At that height the options are severely limited, I know of one person of similar stature that has a Specialised Dolce but that may be out of the budget range, or have 2300 at the kind of money available.

Has she considered second hand? There are a few tri forums out there where she may be able to pick up a bargain (as, in my experience, there is an unusually high proportion of short blokes competing, as well as women).

A two year old bike with 105 could come out about the same money and be a much better investment than a new bike with Sora.

I would also try Islabikes - they make some very nice road bikes for smaller riders, not just kids.

Good point, but they might be way out of budget!

I have the perfect bike hiding in my garage, but she can't have it (it's for my daughter), a Paul Donohue frame @ 18" (45cm), with 650 wheels....

The smallest Tifosi frame is 450mm CK7 centre to top and the 450mm C-T CK3. They ould work for her. You won't find one at £500 though unless the shop is selling at a loss.

I don't have one that size she could try anyway but someone might.
