morning all

got a phone call last night of my girlfriends younger brother (he is 13) all excited that he has been given "an old racer"

i haven't seen it yet but he said its an Motobecane

an has a Huret rear dérailleur with down shifters

he is bringing it around tonight so i can take a look

anyone know anything about them?

There French !

There was many nasty Motobecanes which were built poorly and weighed as heavy as a elephant.

Beware of a French bike as it could have entirely French threaded parts like Headset/Bottom-Bracket/Freewheel/Pedals, these parts are hard to come by.

Many riders don't like Motobecanes because they don't have Campag' on them but Simplex/Stronglight and Weinnmann instead, its an ignorance thing really :(

If it say MBK on it it has nothing to do with the French company when it folded an American firm bought the name Motobecane but all their bikes are called MBK.

PS' it will be nice to see another Motobecane on this site ! Be it high quality or just bog standard, so get some pic's taken.

The same company also manufactured under the name Motoconfort. Just happens I have one for sale at the moment :)

If you ever get chance to look at Cyclepedia: A Tour of Iconic Bicycle Designs, you'll see the French are one of the great cycling innovators, something they've never really had the credit for that they deserve.
