Where to buy 3M 2228 rubber mastic tape?

Try marine chandlers like sailboats.co.uk - it's called self-amalgamating tape and is commonly used on rigging.
 
If its the stuff I have used before, it would have to be wrapped for it to bond to itself, so a strip would not work

Exactly, you wrap it round and it forms a protective tube but not stuck to the frame. It's like heat shrink in that respect.
 
£24 for 2 strips of sticky tape! :shock: :shock: :shock:

zip-tie an old innertube to your stay or if you are fussy about looks cut it to shape and evo-stick it. If it is a carbon frame check which glues you can use first.
 
I am fussy about looks, you dont get clear innertubes!

Did you see the light bulb test though?
Its not just sticky tape.

I picked up a roll in B&Q. They have it labelled as silicone tape. Useful for wrapping around cables and hoses where they touch the frame ;)
