See that shot of the winner under a blanket? That was the state I was in at the top! Where was the blanket person on Easter Sunday?

As for Boardman's record I'm with Kerplunk although I note the HC course is only 1,324 yards - I'm sure it was longer than that from the village. BTW Boardman climbed at an average speed of approx 13mph for that record!

Gareth Armitage won the national hill climb in 1978 as well.......... why is it that short people can climb better than lanky bits of string like me :(

I'm proof that we don't, mind you I bet Boardman wouldn't have done it in that time if he weighed as much as me. I shouldn't have carb loaded for 20 years before the ride. :D
 
According to teh UCI rules a road bike must have two brakes. Nevertheless I see on the very bikes only one. :?

I think it was in a time before the UCI had disapeared up its own backside and common sense prevailed as there's not much stopping power needed when you are going uphill.

I agree with you, but nevertheless I can recall a world championship cyclo cross somewher in the 70's where nobody less tham Roger de Vlaemink did race with only one brake. he got a penalty at that time. And race was not the right word. It was awfull weather and more running than riding. That's why he decided to do it eith only one brake.
 
Hill Climbs are often ridden on fixed wheel by the specialists as the weight saving is substantial. In terms of UK road laws only a front brake is required - or that's been the interpretation for many years.

Were the National Championships run under UCI regulations back in 1975? Are they now - I don't know.
