If you build with crap you can get spokes cheaper for sure, but £1 each is about the going rate for decent DT or Sapim spokes.

I'd say the labour wasn't far off either, maybe a teeny tiny bit steep.
 
Unless they are aero spokes I wouldnt want to be paying more than 50 - 60 p for DT Swiss or Sapim spokes
 
If you buy all the stuff from the shop, they usually build for free....

It's all very well sourcing cheap tat from all over, but if it goes wrong, who are you going to blame?

For plain gauge.

Double butted are becoming more and more expensive as more and more people buy boutique wheels.

Only wheelbuilding I ever do in the shop is pretty much for internal gear hubs, as they're the only wheels it's cost effective for (according to my clientele).
 
I've seen shops selling DT and sapin? Plain gauge spokes for £1.50 each... With a discount too 1.25 per spoke for a full set and £1 for with a build.

Having just build up a set of wheels meself, I bought my spokes from www.rosebikes.co.uk

About 45p a spoke for the top of the range DT Revolutions and 30p per spoke for DT Comps.

Absolute bargain at half the price of any shop in the UK!!! Sure, they're based in Germany, but the postage was only a fiver, they turned up fast and they threw in a free gym bag thingy.

Would there be any saving in lacing up the wheels yerself and just asking the shop to tension and true them??
